Table Tilting/Tipping:
Table tipping/tilting séances are used for the purpose of communicating with the spirits and divination. The sitters are placed around a table, sitting with their fingertips placed lightly on the top edges of the table. One of the sitters acts as a spokesperson and calls out for any spirits in the room to come forward and make contact. Sometimes the table will start to shake, move and vibrate. The table may rise up on one or two legs and begin to turn, sometimes pivoting on one leg. If the spokesperson wants to make contact with the spirit by getting it to spell out words, he or she will call out the letters of the alphabet and when the specific letter is reached the table will move, shake or vibrate. If the table is up on one leg or two it may drop down when the right letter is reached.
Table tilting/tipping became popular in the nineteenth century with the rise of spiritualism. It originally came from America, then spread to Europe and then finally to England in 1853. The main attraction of table tilting/tipping was that a medium was not required to take part and that it could be done in any home with any group of people. The table tilting/tipping phenomenon became extremely popular that scientists tried to explain how it works by showing that the movement of the table was due to the unconscious muscular movements of the people with their fingers placed on the table. This means that the people who are placing their fingers o on the table may believe that they are pressing downwards on the table but are in fact pressing down in such a way that the table turns on vibrates. The force that the people exerted was given a scientific name “Electric Force” but even though scientists believed that the table movement could be explained it does not explain or answer the question who are what is directing the force and how the table can sometimes give perfect answers that were unknown to the people present.
